Motorcycle Safety Checklist
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) recommends a six-step pre-ride checklist to go over: Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis, and Sidestand.
1) CHECK TIRES:
Visually inspect your tires for problems such as rim dings, wobbles, or deflation. Look for foreign objects caught in the treads, tears, bent spokes, and the like. Check your pressure regularly to ensure that the tires are inflated up to manufacturer specs.
2) CHECK CONTROLS
Be sure that your brakes and other cables operate smoothly and without binding before using the vehicle.
3) TEST LIGHTS
Test high and low beams as well as your taillight before operating your bike at night. Make sure that your break lights work. If your lights don't work or look dim, the problem might be related to your bulbs or your relay circuitry.
4) CHECK OIL
Check oil levels frequently. When you're riding in the hot and dry terrain of Arizona, it’s easy to burn down your reserves -- particularly when you're driving along long featureless stretches of road.
5) CHECK OUT THE SUSPENSION
Test your suspension by rocking on your bike. If you notice a wobble or asymmetric response, you might want to take your bike to your mechanic's shop.
6) CHECK SIDESTAND
Inspect your sidestand to make sure it's intact and not warped or jammed.
