Some Surprising Statistics and Laws for Motorcycle Riders in Arizona

Arizona Motorcycle Accident Statistics

As Arizona motorcycle accident lawyers, we examine statistics for motorcycle accidents frequently since we see so many motorcycle accidents.

One of the statistics that we thought was interesting to learn is that based on 2010 data from the Arizona Department of Transportation, it was found that the peak hours for motorcycle crashes are between 4p.m.-5p.m.

Another noteworthy fact is that the day that is most prevalent for fatal motorcycle accidents is Fridays.

In 2010, there were 2,735 motorcycle crashes that occurred in the roads in Arizona based on reported accidents.

Arizona Motorcycle Laws

As far as laws that people may not be aware of, motorcycle mufflers must stay below a certain decibel level. Many non-motorcycle riders think that motorcycles are very loud, but it is true that the mufflers must remain under a certain decibel level.

5-Year Comparison of Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Arizona

By Motorcycle Accident Lawyer on November 7, 2011 - No comments

As Arizona motorcycle accident lawyers, we are quite concerned on how the statistics on fatal motorcycle crashes have been as of late. Danger is always present on the road; let these figures be a reminder to each and every one of us to practice the utmost care when riding a motorcycle.

Motorcycles Involved in Arizona Fatal Crashes (2005 – 2009)

Released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), figures from 2005 to 2009 do not depict a steady trend in terms of fatal motorcycle accidents. Unlike fatal crashes as a whole which have been decreasing as of late, fatal motorcycle accidents rise and fall from year to year.

In 2005, of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes in Arizona, 134 were motorcycles which made up 8.4 percent of all vehicles involved. The next year, numbers increased by ten which composed 8.3 percent of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes. By 2007, the numbers of motorcycles which ended up in fatal crashes remained at 144, or 9.9 percent, of all vehicles, and increased by two the following year (11.5 percent of vehicles).

In 2009, numbers significantly dropped to 126 with motorcycles composing 12.5 percent of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes – the lowest within the five-year period.

What Do These Figures for Arizona Fatal Motorcycle Accidents Mean?

Except for 2005, the numbers of vehicles which have been involved in fatal crashes were constantly declining. With no steady decrease in motorcycle involvement, it goes to show that there is still more work to be done in terms of motorcycle safety in Arizona.

To help the fight against fatal motorcycle accidents, we urge our readers to follow traffic rules at all times and to avoid the most common causes of traffic accidents, such as impairment, aggressive driving, and speeding.

Arizona Aggressive Driving Statistics

Many motorcycle riders are hurt by other drivers that are driving too aggressively for the driving conditions. According to the 2010 statistics for accidents that have involved motorcyclists, there were a total of 145 deaths and 11,080 motorcyclists who were injured. Many times when examining the facts of the Arizona motorcycle accident, these accidents are due to the aggressive drivers of motor vehicles.

Arizona Right Of Way Laws

In Arizona, there is a law that states that you should yield for motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and other slow moving vehicles. This is called the right of way law that gives priority to those that cannot avoid an accident fast enough. This is due to the fact that it is a danger to those who are unable to accelerate fast enough. Failing to yield is also under the law considered as an aggressive way of driving due to the injuries and fatalities that it may produce to other innocent people.

Arizona Motorcycle Accident Statistics Indicate Need for Increased Safety Measures

By Motorcycle Accident Lawyer on September 12, 2011 - No comments

There were a total of 2,735 motorcycle crashes in Arizona in 2010, according to data released by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). These accidents resulted in 86 fatalities and 2,390 injuries. This means that 3 percent of all Arizona motorcycle accidents ended in fatalities and more than 80 percent of motorcycle accidents resulted in injuries. This highlights the need for increased safety measures and improved awareness of the dangers of driving near motorcycles.

AZ Motorcycle Crash Statistics

  • In 2010, 73.09 percent of Arizona motorcycle accidents occurred in urban areas. These accidents resulted in 60 fatalities and 1,715 injuries.
  • Rural crashes only accounted for 26.91 percent of all Arizona motorcycle accidents. This seems to contradict the misconception that motorcycle accidents often occur on out-of-the way roadways with poor lighting.

Although collisions with a moving motor vehicle accounted for the highest number of motorcycle crashes in 2010, these crashes had several other causes.

Arizona Motorcycle Accident Causes

  • Overturning accounted for 326 accidents, with 11 fatalities and 291 injuries.
  • Thirteen accidents resulted from collision with a pedestrian. These accidents resulted in two fatalities and 11 injuries.
  • Collisions with cyclists caused seven injuries and no fatalities.
  • Collisions with animals caused 32 accidents and a total of 26 injuries.
  • Collisions with fixed objects, such as utility poles, caused 351 accidents. These accidents resulted in 23 fatalities and 296 injuries.
  • Vehicle fire or explosion caused two injuries and no deaths.
  • Non-collision accidents, which include cargo loss and vehicle immersion, numbered 422. There were three fatalities and 385 injuries.

Motorcyclists and the driver of cars and trucks who do not follow the rules of the road put other drivers in danger. New Study on the Slight Decline of Motorcycle Deaths

Motorcycle riders are at higher risk of being injured because of the bikes nature and the lack of protection. However, in 2010, there was at least a 2% decrease in motorcycle fatalities according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). There was a decline in motorcycle fatalities from 4,465 in 2009 down to 4,376 in 2010.

In a study conducted by Dr. James Hedlund of Highway Safety North, there was a 16% decline of motorcycle fatalities in the 1st nine month of 2009. The data is based on the District of Columbia and other 50 states. The drop began in 2009 with a substantial decrease of 16%. On the other hand, it followed 11 years of consistent increase in motorcycle rider fatalities.

GHSA is foretelling decreases in about 50% of the states with substantial decrease in most. For instance, Texas had a drop of 16%, Oregon 27% and Oklahoma in 30%. Although on the surface, the national decline is wonderful news but in a deeper evaluation of the figures raises some concerns.

Among this is that fact that the 2% decrease in 2010 pales in comparison to 2009’s 16% decrease. Then, the decrease in 2010 was focused in the early quarter of that year and fatalities are in truth increasing 3% in the 3rd quarter. You can also credit the fact that with the escalating gas prices and improving economy, motorcycle travel is expected to go up and consequently increases the risk exposure. Lastly, motorcycle helmet use substantially and distressingly declined from 67 % in 2009 down to 54% in 2010.

Upon assessing the data, the increase in the fatalities in the end of 2010 is a warning sign. There is an increased risk of road tragedies as the motorcycle use goes up. It helps to remind all roadway users about proper driving habits and safely share the road.

In hopes of continuing the decrease in motorcycle fatalities, Arizona motorcycle safety is reinforced. Such as increasing helmet use, reduce alcohol impairment and reduced speeding. It is suggested to offer motorcycle operator training to those who want it.

Arizona DUI Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Drivers who operate under the influence of alcohol put everyone on the roadway at great risk. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in the year 2009, there were 5,622 alcohol-related crashes in Arizona. Of those, 221 accidents involved a motorcycle. Drunk driving can cause catastrophic injuries. Regardless of whether the impaired driver is operating the motorcycle or another vehicle, the consequences of DUI collisions involving motorcycles can be tragic.

Of the total 5,622 accidents in Arizona involving alcohol, 1,126 DUI crashes resulted in an injury. Also, 166 of those injury accidents involved a motorcycle rider. ADOT goes on to report that 3.9 percent of all DUI crashes that year involved a two- or three-wheel motorcycle. A total of 36 people were killed in alcohol related motorcycle accidents.

It is in the best interest of all motorcycle riders to drive safely and defensively. Unfortunately, no amount of safety precautions can prevent all injury accidents. Motorcyclists injured by drunk drivers may pursue compensation for the damages they have suffered by filing a personal injury claim. A personal injury claim is a civil lawsuit that holds at-fault drivers liable for the damages they cause. A successful civil lawsuit may result in financial compensation for losses including medical bills, lost wages, cost of hospitalization and physical therapy.

Recent GHSA Motorcycle Fatality Statistics Demonstrate Decline in Death Rate

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has revealed a report on the latest statistics in motorcycle fatalities. Through this report, it was revealed that in 2010, motorcycle fatalities decreased by 2% from 2009. This report features a look at motorcycle fatalities in 2010 across 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The data is still in its preliminary stages, but most of the states have already completed their fatality counts until the first 9 months of 2010, which was how GHSA had reached the conclusion about the 2% decrease in deaths for the full year. The GHSA has projected declines in motorcycle fatalities in several states. This decline could be due to training programs and laws which strengthen penalties for riders who do not have a motorcycle-specific license. The presence of motorcycle clubs that advocate safe and sober driving also helped in this decline.

The GHSA has noted some problems with the increase in motorcycle fatalities. The decrease in 2010 is far less than 2009’s 16% decrease. Also, the noted decrease in 2010 happened in the first few months of year, while fatalities actually increased in the later months as compared to the same months in 2009. Motorcycle use is also expected to rise due to the increasing gas prices and the improving economy, as such; this increases the risk for fatal accidents. Motorcycle helmet use has also dropped drastically 67 percent in 2009 to 54 percent in 2010.
