Motorcycle Insurance

Arizona Motorcycle Insurance and the Law

Carrying Arizona motorcycle insurance is a requirement for all motorcycle riders in the state and as experienced personal injury attorneys we know the importance of carrying good insurance. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), motorcycle riders in Arizona are required by state law to carry liability insurance with the following minimums:

  • $10,000 property damage coverage for a single accident;
  • $15,000 coverage for bodily injury for one person involved in a single accident; and
  • $30,000 coverage for bodily injury total for a single accident.

Motorcycle riders need to be aware that liability insurance only covers damages and injuries to other people involved in a collision and not for the rider. In order for the rider’s damages to be covered, both comprehensive and liability insurance must be purchased.

The Truth about Arizona Motorcycle Insurance Minimums

AZ Motorcycle Crash InsuranceMotorcycle insurance is meant to protect both the rider of the motorcycle and the driver of another vehicle in the event of an Arizona motorcycle collision. Good insurance will help decrease a motorcycle rider’s additional liability and personal exposure after the insurance has helped cover the costs of property damage and medical care for those injured. Motorcycle riders need to understand that often the minimums needed to meet the state requirement for insurance will not cover serious injuries sustained in a crash. A rider that carries comprehensive insurance with bodily injury coverage of only $15,000 or that carries only liability may find him- or herself in a poor financial situation if injured in an accident with an underinsured or uninsured motorist.

Tips about Arizona Motorcycle Insurance

It is required by law to have Arizona motorcycle insurance if one has an Arizona Motorcycle license, just like it is the law to carry Arizona car insurance within the state as well.

Liability insurance is now the minimum level of Arizona insurance coverage. The required minimum amounts of liability are $15,000 is for bodily injury coverage for one individual in one accident; $30,000 for bodily injury coverage total per accident, and $10,000 for property damage per accident. Liability insurance covers the other people that were injured but it doesn’t cover your own injuries.

Only the vehicles that one can operate in the public roads are the ones that one can be insured as stated by the state law: these are vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds and golf carts. However, if one’s vehicle is for storage, may it be for maintenance or seasonal storage, one doesn’t need to maintain the insurance coverage until it becomes operational again.

Failure to maintain financial responsibility would lead you to suspension of vehicle registration and possibility of suspension of driver’s license.

In order to clear the suspension, one should provide a proof of insurance for that period or one can submit a SR-22 form, which must come from the insurance provider, stating that one has already the required liability coverage and one will be paying $50 reinstatement fee.

That is why before choosing the insurance one should know the various types of insurance coverage to know which one is right for you. Follow our Arizona Law Team Twitter account for more useful information, news, and other topics of interest.
